We once again saw more numbers of tourists arriving, winter time travelers looking to enjoy the ideal local climate. Scattered early day cloud cover,
plenty of sunshine, with high temperatures ranging 75 to 80 degrees.
We continued to have the cycles of north winds, though by this weekend ocean conditions were ideal, no wind to speak of, as well as improved fishing
action. Water temperatures were in the 71 to 74 degree range. Early in the week there was a particularly swift current sweeping through the grounds
north of Punta Gorda and this made it tougher for anglers to do much. Overall the ocean clarity improved, but at times there were swirling
greenish currents encountered.
Large concentrations of baitfish now congregating on the grounds just offshore of the San Jose del Cabo Hotel Zone, mackerel and sardineta. Other
bait options included, caballito, ballyhoo and slabs of squid. With all of the food source concentrated in this area there were dorado and striped
marlin found in good numbers on these same grounds. This is all in very close proximity of the local marina, a seasonal event that always gets the
locals excited, sometimes this will only last for a week or two before baitfish schools migrate elsewhere, we will see how this season progresses.
Inshore there were roosterfish, sierra and a variety of shallow structure species. Most of these fish were smaller in size, though this past week
a handful of much larger roosterfish up to 40 lb. were reported, also sierra to 8 lb.
The action for yellowfin tuna had stalled out during the past couple of weeks, due to weather conditions and changing water, etc. This weekend as
the weather settled down for a couple of days, the yellowfin tuna became active Friday on the Gordo Banks once again. Anglers were drift fishing
with squid and landed tuna up to 80 lb., all of these fish seemed to be in the 50 to 80 lb. class. Earlier in the week there were a few smaller
football sized tuna found scattered, but these were the first nicer grade tuna found in recent days. No huge numbers, but there was a fair chance at
catching two or three of these fish.
Wahoo were scarce with the cooler water, though a handful were accounted for on the grounds from Punta Gorda to Cardon. It seems that the ocean
conditions near Vinorama is now cooler and dirtier, better looking blue water now found nearer San Jose el Cabo.
The highlight off of the bottom was a 70 lb. class amberjack, also we saw a few more leopard grouper, yellow snapper, red snapper and smaller
amberjack in the mix. We anticipate more structure action in coming months, as that is the normal pattern as we near spring
time. We heard about reports of smaller yellowtail on the Pacific side of Cabo San Lucas, this is usually a sign that these gamefish are eventually
moving in the direction of the Sea Of Cortez, it has been several years now since we saw a great run of these sought after gamefish.
Peak season now for whales, should be easy to spot these mammals for at least another month.

Moderate winter time crowds now, noticeably lighter, as schools return to session after traditional holiday seasons. Weather patterns are typically
unpredictable, lows in 50s some days and highs up to mid-80s on others. Wind predominately from the north, in cycles of two, three, four days.
Moderate ocean swells, with clarity fluctuating accordingly to running currents. Ocean temperatures have been in the 72 to 74 degree range,
slightly warmer than normal for this time frame.
Bait options consisted of caballito, ballyhoo, slabs of squid, sardineta and some mackerel. Large schools of baitfish now congregating on areas off
of San Jose del Cabo, more sardineta than anything else. No word on sardinas moving within range of local fleets.
Striped Marlin are following their food source in this same direction, though still not in big numbers, but more this week compared to last.
Dorado were the more numerous gamefish at this time, found throughout the area, often close to shore, striking on a variety of lures, but more
readily on available bait. Sizes ranged up to 20 lb., though the majority were averaging ten pounds.
Wahoo action rebounded somewhat this week, as we saw ocean temperatures remain warm enough to keep these fish in the area. Still this action was
more sporadic, most strikes were reported from Punta Gorda to Vinorama. Sizes were all the way from sierra sized wahoo, up to 45 lb. Ballyhoo and
caballito both produced a higher percentage of strikes.
Juvenile sized roosterfish were most common, though a few much larger roosters in the mix and we are now seeing more sierra found along local
beach stretches. At times frigate birds could be seen circling and diving closer to shore, especially mid- morning, this activity was typically
associated with feeding dorado.
Yellowfin tuna action was spotty, but we are seeing limited numbers of tuna in the 10 to 25 lb. class taken through the inshore zone, seen more near
Cardon and La Fortuna recently. Striking on smaller sized lures and while drift fishing with strips of squid.
Not much going off the bottom, commercial fleet has concentrated on the red snapper, not much red crab surface activity this past week. A few cabrilla
taken off of the high spots, bonito, pargo, but more triggerfish than anything else. We look for this bottom bite to improve in coming weeks,
hoping for a good yellowtail season.

We noticed a significant decline in tourists this week, with schools now back in session and work holidays over, there are lighter crowds. Cooler weather patterns continues, average
lows about 55 degrees, with highs about 76 degrees, so comparatively to northern regions, still quite pleasant for mid-winter season. Wins from the north continues, cycle of two or three
days, then residing, before picking back up. On Friday winds increased to 20 plus mph, through Saturday as well, actually closing down Cabo San Lucas marina to vessels under 40 ft. Sunday
conditions are forecast to calm down.
Water temperature is on a cooling trend, now in the 72 to 74 degree range through much of the region, clarity fluctuated, some very clean blue water
found close to shore, but other areas being stirred up and off colored. Transition period now for many gamefish now, such as dorado and wahoo,
these fish prefer warmer waters and will migrate further south, striped marlin on the other hand prefer the cooler waters, with peak season
normally in the winter and though spring.
Earlier in the week there was a run of pelagic crabs, drifting to the surface in masses on local fishing grounds, being scooped up in nets and
used for bait for red snapper. Commercial fleet activity always ramps up when these red crabs appear. These
huachinango average 2 to 5 lb. and reach up to about 14 lb. Very prized eating and a valuable commercial product.
Sportfishing fleets found more scattered action with cooler choppy conditions through much of the week, best action was encountered fairly
close to shore, areas from Santa Maria to La Fortuna, dorado in the 5 to 15 lb. class being most common, also some roosterfish and sierra, using
caballito or ballyhoo was main method. Bait options available from the marina were for caballito, ballyhoo and slabs of squid. Average catches
consisted of a couple of dorado, up to five or six. We only saw a couple of smaller sized wahoo come in all week. Yellowfin tuna action was very slow
on local grounds, a handful of yellowfin were landed earlier in the week off the local grounds, these fish ranged from 10 lb., up to about 80 lb.,
though very few numbers. The area that is producing cow sized tuna was the Jaime Bank outside of Cabo San Lucas, several long range San Diego vessels
were chumming these grounds this week, local pangeros were making the long run to get into this action, putting in long days but returning with fish
to 200 lb. This being more of a commercial prospect.
There was a lack of much billfish activity, we are hearing of more mackerel moving in the direction off of San Jose del Cabo, this should attract the
striped marlin, some are being seen now, but very scattered. Also full moon period as well, as things shift and weather settles we are optimistic for
improved action.

anglers reported an approximate fish count of: 84 dorado, 16 yellowfin tuna, 2 wahoo, 4 barred pargo, 32 sierra, 26 roosterfish, 3 cabrilla, 58

Baja’s Los Cabos destination.
Temperatures proved to be cool by local
standards, lows were in the 50s and
highs in the lower 70s, though still
very pleasant compared to most of North
America. Skies were clouds at times
early, with sunny burning through by
mid-morning. Winds were variable, the
period started with light breezes,
though through this weekend northern
winds increased, this made for rougher
ocean conditions and contributed to
pushing in cooler and off colored
currents. We are now in the season
where
conditions are cooling, north winds can
be predominant and patterns can be
unpredictable. Ocean temperatures were
now down in the 72 to 74 degree
range.*
*Bait supplies remained similar,
caballito being the main bait found in
the
marina, slabs of squid and ballyhoo
also offered. Schools of baitfish were
non consistent, very few mackerel, more
sardineta at this time. No reports
of sardinas being available. This
cooling trend normally would attract
mackerel and sardinas as well, so we
see what follows.*
*Early this week, before cool front
swept through, the all-around action
was good for a mix of dorado, wahoo and
some yellowfin tuna, as well as
roosterfish and some billfish migrating
into local waters. Things changed
significantly through the week, mainly
due to cold winds from the north
pushing in off colored colder current.
Dorado, which had been one of the
more common catches, all of a sudden
became very limited and scattered,
same for wahoo, they had been elusive,
but were showing signs of becoming
more active just before the weather
turned over. *
*Also the first part of the week saw
the yellowfin action starting to
rebound for some larger cow sized fish
in the vicinity of the Gordo Banks,
no big numbers, though a handful of
large yellowfin were brought in, the
largest was by a group of local anglers
from a small panga, fish was
brought in a night, weighing over 300
lb. Overall tuna bite had been slow
early in the week, then the north blow,
which helped shut down the wahoo
and dorado bite. But offshore of San
Jose del Cabo, anywhere from 4 to 8
miles, there were rapidly moving pods
of porpoise encountered, with the
yellowfin tuna moving among them. Tuna
ranging 10 to 30 lb. were being
landed, best techniques was drifting
under the porpoise with strips of
squid. Charters targeting this hit or
miss event were finding one of two,
up to 7 or 8 fish. Easy to talk about,
but this is a fast changing
opportunist deal, with windy conditions
making it even harder, also
increased boat pressure would put
things down and charters had to chase
these schools all morning to have
legitimate chance. *
*Inshore the roosterfish action slow
way down have dirty cooler water
pushed in. Bottom action was limited to
various, mostly smaller sized,
jacks, pargos, bonito and triggerfish.
The exception was that we saw a
couple of amberjack and cabrilla.*
*Billfish faded as the week progressed,
though a few sailfish were still
encountered in the cooler conditions,
nicer sized fish which were released.
A few striped marlin found, very
scattered. As conditions do eventually
stabilize and we see more offshore
baitfish, we anticipate the marlin bite
to break open.*
*Many more whales now being signed,
these mammals were alter to show this
season, next two months will be peak
season.*

*Los Cabos is now bustling with
tourists, many family groups now
vacationing for the holiday season.
Weather patterns have been cooler, with
scattered cloud cover and high
temperatures in the lower 70s, a bit
chilly
for local standards, though compared to
more northern territories, very
pleasant. Ocean water temperatures were
in the 75 to 77 degree range and
swells were minimal. Variable northern
winds, but overall favorable fishing
conditions.*
*Bait supplies out of the local port
consisted of caballito, ballyhoo and
slabs of squid. There are sardineta and
mackerel just starting to move onto
local bait grounds as well, so far more
sardineta. This is attracting
striped marlin into this same area,
despite not being the warm season, we
are seeing some sailfish as well.*
*Most consistent fishing action has
been for dorado, most of this action
found with a mile or two from shore.
Anglers were using smaller sized
trolling lures and various baitfish to
entice these gamefish, average size
fish was in the 10 lb. class, but there
were larger specimens to over 20
lb. also being found. For the last
several seasons now the month of
December has proved to be the best time
of year for these popular game fish
and with the water temperature still
favorable, we expect this action to
last into the New Year.*
*Action for yellowfin tuna was much
more scattered, the bite off of La
Fortuna, where the shark problem was so
bad, faded off, just a few tuna up
to 40 lb. were reported from those
grounds and these were taken on strips
of squid. A few tuna in the 15 to 40
lb. class also were hooked into off of
Punta Gorda on a mix of caballito and
lures, but these were very limited.
Off of the Gordo Banks there was a
chance at a nicer grade of yellowfin to
100 lb., though this was very hit of
miss and involved large amounts of
squid for chum and plenty of patience
to repeatedly make drifts all day
long for a chance at a hook up, mainly
something the local commercial
pangeros were doing. On the outside,
some 20 or more miles offshore, there
was porpoise activity moving in the
direction off of San Jose del Cabo, on
Friday there were a couple of 200 lb.
class yellowfin landed off of larger
sportfishers, so maybe this will
develop into something.*
*Wahoo are in the area, but getting
them to hit has not been that easy,
though on any given day that could
change, best bet has been on bait
versus
lures. Of the wahoo we saw, sizes
ranged 15 to 40 lb. Though one monster
122 lb. wahoo was brought in by a spear
fisherman. On Saturday.*
*Off of the beach stretches just to the
north of the Puerto Los Cabos
marina there were good numbers of
juvenile sized roosterfish, some up to
15
lb., also mixed in were jack crevalle
and sierra. Best bet was with the
smaller sized caballito, if sardinas
were available this action would bust
wide open.*
*Off the bottom there was action for
huachinango, most of these under 5
lb., also a few yellow snapper, barred
pargo and of course the triggerfish
were eager to bite as well.*

Everyone is now busy getting ready for
Christmas, more tourists arriving,
though there are not as many anglers as
we would expect. The typically
weather pattern of north winds
continues, particularly early in the
week,
though there was decent fishing action
close to shore in more protected
areas. The Pacific side was calm for
the most part. Ocean water temperature
was averaging 77 degrees throughout the
local region. There were scattered
clouds and climate was a bit cooler
than previous week, though on most days
highs were at least up to 75 degrees,
no rainfall reported.
Bait vendors were finding decent
supplies of caballito, also were
offering
ballyhoo and slabs of squid, no
sardinas found near San Jose del Cabo.
Some
of the panga charters were able to find
some chihuil baitfish, but this was
not a guarantee, needed to put in the
extra effort and time for this. Most
of the local charters are working the
fishing grounds from Red Hill, Gordo
Banks, La Fortuna and off of Punta
Gorda. Most common species found were
dorado, but also still decent chances
at yellowfin tuna and wahoo.
Off of La Fortuna there were yellowfin
tuna of various sizes found, some
nicer quality fish. The problem was
that there was an abundance of large
aggressive sharks on these same grounds
and they were ready to grab any
tuna that was hooked into, a ratio of
at least 80 % of hooks ups being
lost, so not many charters were even
fishing there anymore. There were
yellowfin found on the Inner Gordo
Banks, though numbers were very
limited,
a handful of tuna over 100 lb. were
accounted for this week, though this
took a lot of persistence and large
amounts of squid, so that you could
continue to drift, while chumming and
patiently waiting for a chance at a
hook up.
Wahoo were also now found on the Gordo
Banks, though they have been
finicky, best bet was to slow troll
baitfish, either caballito or chihuil.
Not many were striking on lures, some
of these fish were also found further
north and off of Punta Gorda. With the
warmer water still hanging around we
expect to have chances at wahoo into
the New Year.
Dorado were providing the most success
for anglers, most of these also on
various baits, ranging in sizes up to
20 lb. Many anglers were able to
catch their two fish limit and release
others. Areas closer to shore, such
as Punta Gorda and Cardon were best for
the dorado, a few tuna were also
found on the same grounds, if sardinas
were available the chances of
getting into the tuna action would be
much greater, who knows when we will
have sardinas locally. These baitfish
do also migrate along the shorelines.
Not much going off the bottom, though
we did see more red snapper this
week, majority were smaller sized, but
a few nicer fish in the mix. Good
numbers of roosterfish were found along
the beach stretches, within a mile
or less of Puerto Los Cabos Marina.
There fish readily hit on trolled
caballito, most of them were under 15
lb., a few much larger jack crevalle
were mixed in. Also a handful of
sierra, but with no sardinas, hard to
find
a wide open bite for these fish. Also
still early in the season for these
colder water species. Billfish was very
scattered off of San Jose del Cabo,
surprisingly there were more sailfish
seen than striped marlin, strange for
this time of year.

Limited number of tourists now
arriving, as Christmas time and New
Year
nears we do usually see greater numbers
of people arriving, especially
family groups. Now is the perfect time
to visit, ideal weather, despite
dipping down to 55 degrees early
morning, daytime highs have averaged in
the upper 70s, plenty of warm sunshine.
Early in the week there was more
wind from the north, but by the weekend
we saw much calmer ocean
conditions. Average water temperature
was about 77 degrees, with some
isolated areas up to 80 degrees, surf
was minimal, though tides were
extreme with passing of recent full
moon, the last one of this decade.
Bait vendors are finding caballito in
the marina area, also offering
ballyhoo and slabs of squid. Off of the
San Jose del Cabo Hotel Zone the
schools of baitfish, mackerel and
sardineta, are moving in and this will
become an option for the next month or
two. The overall fishing action was
more scattered this week, perhaps the
moon was affecting feeding habits,
also there was a noticeably stronger
current sweeping through local
grounds, as well as winds being a
factor at times. The majority of local
charters were working the grounds from
the Gordo Banks, to La Fortuna,
Cardon and close off of Punta Gorda.
Main target species continue to be
yellowfin tuna, dorado and wahoo, also
some billfish and limited bottom action
to round out the options. Yellowfin
tuna varying in sizes up to 75 lb., the
larger fish were found on the Gordo
Banks and other mixed grade of
yellowfin off of La Fortuna. Though
there
was a major issue with sharks attacking
hooked fish and they got more than
their share, these were not little
sharks either, we saw quality sized
tuna
bitten completely in half or swallowed
whole, they were even attacking
wahoo or dorado if they had the chance.
It has been a while since so many
aggressive sharks were found on these
same fishing grounds, hard to say how
long they will be around, they now know
that they are able to find some
easy tasty meals. Hopefully when the
water temperature cools off the sharks
will move on.
Wahoo were more finicky this week,
though they have not gone anywhere,
just
were more wary about striking. Some hit
on strips of squid while anglers
targeted tuna, other on trolled baits,
a smaller percentage were striking
on lures. The largest we weighed in
recently was a 48 lb. specimen. Sunday
is the local wahoo tournament, which
was original set for Nov. 17, but had
to be rescheduled due to Tropical Storm
Raymond. Will be interesting to see
how many teams enter, since it is now
during a not so busy tourist time
frame.
Numbers of dorado were down compared to
last week, though these fish are
still scattered through the area in
smaller sized schools, the larger sized
dorado were now found on the Pacific,
though off of San Jose del Cabo we
did see some fish up to 20 lb.
Billfish action now seems to be
transitioning from the Pacific to the
direction of San Jose, these fish
follow their food source. Though the
bite
is spotty, has not been wide open yet,
there are striped marlin being found
within several miles of shore, the
majority were in the 70 to 120 lb.
range. Also saw at least one sailfish
in recent days.
Not much going off the bottom, an
occasional leopard or baqueta grouper,
various pargo, bonito and triggerfish.
More whales definitely now showing
up, peak season will be here now any
week, as these mammals are now
arriving for their winter’s stay.

launching out of the panga area from
Puerto Los Cabos Marina sent out an
estimated 70 charters for the week and
anglers reported an approximate fish
count of: 1 sailfish, 9 striped
marlin, 38 dorado, 78 yellowfin tuna,
14 wahoo, 5 yellow snapper, 3
pompano, 4 golden eye tile fish, 6
barred pargo, 9 cabrilla, 2 amberjack,

bonito, 5 sierra, 5 roosterfish, 6
baqueta, 2 surgeonfish and 45
triggerfish.

Anglers –
Noticeable lighter crowds of visitors
arriving, after Thanksgiving we do
normally see a decline of anglers, as
people now are beginning to prepare
for the Christmas Holidays, now just
around the corner. Weather patterns
did finally stabilize and this week we
saw much calmer ocean conditions, no
crazy rain fall, mostly clear sunny
skies, temperatures into the low 80s,
really an ideal climate for this time
of year.
Ocean actually warmed back up a couple
of degrees, averaging about 80
degrees now. Bait situation is that
sardinas are scarce out of San Jose del
Cabo, now being found schooling near
Cabo San Lucas, makes it tough to have
to back track so far. So local fleets
are mainly relying on caballito,
ballyhoo, slabs of squid and if
fortunate enough to find some chihuil,
they
proved the best for wahoo. Some
mackerel started to appear now off of
the
Hotel Zone, still not consistent from
day to day, as water temps cool some
more, we expect more of these mackerel
and sardineta will move in.
Over all anglers found the bite to be
tougher to start the week, mainly due
to north wind, though later in the week
the wind laid down, water cleared
up and bite was good for yellowfin
tuna, wahoo and dorado. Most of the
action was from Gordo Banks, Cardon, La
Fortuna and off of Punta Gorda.
Best action was on bait, some having to
be worked for, especially the
chihuil, they proved to be the candy
for wahoo. The Gordo Banks produced
yellowfin tuna up over 200 lb., larger
fish lost, though numbers were not
great, but with patience and persistent
effort there were some quality
fish. Strips of squid, small skipjack,
chihuil and caballito all produced.
Wahoo action picked up, trolling live
baits was best, fish up to over 45
lb., though some were taken on Repalas.
Dorado were mixed in on the same
grounds, but scattered, up close to 20
lb. Unusual to find some roosterfish
action further offshore while trolling
for dorado and wahoo, nice sized
fish to 30 lb. Also a couple of
yellowtail, one was an impressive 38
lb.
and there was a 70 lb. amberjack, they
were taken while chunk fishing for
tuna on the Gordo Banks. If weather
holds it looks like very promising
opportunities for the rest of the
month. So things are improving after
recent rain squalls, landscape is a
lush green, plenty of warm sunshine and
great fishing.
Billfish was limited off of San Jose
deal Cabo, a scattering of striped
marlin and a couple small blues. Still
better marlin action now on the
Pacific. More whales are now being seen
with each passing day, it will be
peak season coming up for these
migrating mammals. Sea lions, manta
rays,
porpoise, turtles and of course some
sharks, which have been taking their
share of the tuna catch, have added to
entertainment.

count of: 2 blue marlin, 2 striped
marlin, 66 dorado, 98 yellowfin tuna,

roosterfish, 5 baqueta, 3 surgeonfish,

yellowtail, 3 amberjack, 2 pompano and
30 triggerfish.

Anglers –
The crazy month of November has now
ended, this is time when the big crowds
of anglers diminish, as less people
travel between holidays. After dealing
with TS Raymond last week, this week we
had yet another low pressure system
develop and sweep through Southern Baja
from the west, which brought more
heavy rainfall, as well as some wind
gusts that might have even reached 50
mph in areas, rainfall of anywhere from
4 to 8 inches, depending where you
were. The local Ports were completely
closed on Wednesday, reopening about
8 a.m. on Thursday. This has been a
strange season, very unpredictable
weather patterns, though the water
table definitely has been filled up and
the landscape will be staying green
longer than normal. Be aware of the
mosquitoes as well.
Ocean temperatures dropped a bit, now
averaging about 77 degrees, this
latest storm turned over water
conditions, from all of the run off,
dirty
water for much of the inshore zone,
though now with each passing day we are
seeing clarity improve and the all-
around fishing action quickly rebound.
Baitfish were more scattered, schooling
sardinas now closer to Cabo San
Lucas, local fleets ere using mainly
slabs of squid, ballyhoo and what
other baitfish could be found on the
fishing grounds, caballito vanished,
it will be any week now that school of
mackerel and sardineta appear on the
ground off of San Jose del Cabo.
The better billfish action was on the
Pacific, but in recent days we have
seen more striped marlin showing in the
direction of San Jose, which is
usually the trend during this time
frame. Dorado action improved, as more
numbers of these popular gamefish are
showing throughout the region,
majority of these fish are in the 10 to
15 lb. class, some larger. Wahoo
became a bit more elusive in the dirty
conditions, as did most species, but
as water began to clean up we did see a
few more ‘hoo starting to show, the
action early week had been near
Vinorama, but by weekend the best areas
were closer off of Cardon, La Fortuna
and then on Saturday the wahoo bite
broke open close off of Punta Gorda. If
you get chihuil for bait, that was
the hot ticket, some hit on ballyhoo as
well. Wahoo up to 50 pounds were
weighed in.
Yellowfin tuna action stalled out
during the dirty conditions, but now we
are seeing more tuna in the mix, some
from Iman, San Luis, Gordo Banks and
others further offshore associated with
porpoise. Earlier in the week local
pangeros brought in a cow yellowfin of
about 350 lb., not returning to the
docks until 9 p.m. Though most of the
tuna we did see were from football
size, up to 70 lb. Though the cows are
lurking on the Gordo Banks, just you
need to put in some serious time to
have a real chance.
Off of the bottom we saw various
snapper, pargo, bonito, a few cabrilla
and
of course more triggerfish than
anything else. Along the shoreline
there
were roosterfish and some early season
sierra, but with limited bait this
was not a guaranteed option.
Still only sporadic sightings of
whales, but these mammals are now
arriving
from their northern feeding grounds on
their annual southern migration and
will be in taking up residence in local
waters through the winter months.

bonito, 9 sierra, 10 roosterfish, 4
rainbow runner, 4 golden eyed tilefish,
14 glass eyed snapper and 40
triggerfish.

Anglers –
Last week we saw TS Raymond pass
through the Los Cabos area, shutting
down
all Port activities on Sunday and
Monday, this during a very busy time
frame when these red flag conditions
are rare occurrences. In another week
the large crowds will lighten up, as
they normally do after Thanksgiving
and before the Christmas Holidays.
Unpredictable weather conditions for
the
past month, more north wind than usual
for this early in the season, also
we are now following forecast for
another rain storm that is moving in
the
direction of Southern Baja, all local
interests are hoping this latest
system veers in another direction, as
we have already had plenty of
rainfall, last weekend alone there were
reports of isolated areas receiving
six of more inches of rainfall, also
some major flooding through low lying
regions.
After the passing of the rain the all-
around action seemed to slow down,
which also stirred up ocean conditions,
dirty water and a bit cooler, down
in the 79 degree range, baitfish became
scattered as well. Later in the
week water clarity did improve and
baitfish were becoming more active.
Some
schools of sardinas were found near
marina jetties, also some caballito,
other options were ballyhoo and slabs
of squid.
The wahoo action near Vinorama
vanished, though by Friday a few nice
wahoo
up to 47 lb. were reported, other
strikes lost, so we are confident that
these fish will remain on local grounds
for another month or so. Dorado
were spread out in different direction,
found more consistently towards
Cabo San Lucas, most of these fish were
under 15 lb., with a few exception
of larger 20 lb. plus specimens,
striking both baits and lures.
The yellowfin tuna bite near San Luis
Bank came to a halt, though the big
news was that a few much Alger
yellowfin tuna were hooked into off of
the
Gordo Banks, though more anglers were
having battles with various species
of sharks, there were some monster tuna
now on these grounds. There were
several very impressive catches
records,, including 145 lb,. 272 lb.
and
335 lb., this proved to be best week
yet for this season on these grounds
for the larger grade of yellowfin,
several other cow sized tuna were lost
after long epic battles. Slow trolling
lovely smaller sized skipjack was
the main producer of these big strikes.
Offshore and towards Cabos San
Lucas there were a smaller football
sized grade of yellowfin tuna, though
that was a bit hit or miss, with some
charter landing 5 to 7 fish and
others lucky to find one.
Bottom action continued to be slow,
mainly triggerfish, an occasional
amberjack, cabrilla, snapper or pargo.
Inshore action was limited,
depending on what bait was obtainable,
jack crevalle up to 20 lb., a few
sierra and some juvenile roosterfish up
to 15 lb.
Billfish was red hot on the Pacific
grounds, but were also starting to move
in the direction of the local grounds
off of San Jose del Cabo, a handful
of striped marlin, sailfish and blue
marlin were accounted for in recent
days, nothing too large, stripers
averaged less than 100 lb., blue marlin
up in the 175 lb. range.
