I was fishing the Dirty Pelican Pier in High Island, Texas. Being a weekday, I was the only one on the pier. I had 3 big rods set out for bull reds/sharks and was fishing with my trout rod for bait (croaker or whiting). I had a tiny piece of cut mullet on a small (#2 ?)hook. The fish hit and ran so hard, I didn't think he'd slow before spooling me. I feared for the drag washers (they were singing)and loosened them a bit, using some thumb pressure. Bad idea with spectra line. OUCH! He made four powerful runs before showing signs of tiring. I looked for a pier net and noticed it was 100 feet away. I had to hold him with one hand while I untangled the net and lowered it. Then, he ran under the pier. I put the net rope in my teeth and battled him out of the pilings. He was exhausted at that point (and so was I). I lead him into the net, dropped my rod, and let out a hearty yell! What a fight. Twenty minutes and on a medium action trout rod! Glad I had the Power Pro line on that reel. 12# mono would not have lasted. I love saltwater. Ya never know! |
