Taste Buds ? Catfish have a more refined sense of flavor than humans. Our 10,000 taste buds may seem like a lot, but catfish can have as many as 175,000. This helps them find the exact location of their next meal. |

My brother and I, went on
a fishing trip to Lake
Amistad, TX. We got there
around 5:00 and as soon
as we got there, we hit
the lake. The air
temperature was 46
degrees, and the water
temperature was in the
low 50's. I knew when I
looked at the depth
finder that we were going
to be fishing pre-spawn
patterns and the fish
would be either on the
beds or near them. So we
ran down the lake and we
started looking for
shallow flats with
isolated trees on them.
There is was, plain as
day right off the main
lake. I knew that was
going to be the spot. We
pulled the trolling motor
down and slowly trolled
over there while I fan
casted a lipless
crankbait and caught a
couple of small ones on
the way to the flat. We
finally got there and I
knew I was going for big
fish, not small sized
bait in these waters. So
I picked up my rod and
reel with a 7' Osprey
swimbait on it and tossed
it out there as far as i
could cast. There was
trees here and there but
I didn't want to get too
close to them and risk
scaring those big females
away from them, so I had
to make a long cast. I
let the bait settle down
at the bottom and I
literally put one twitch
on it and my rod jerked
out of my hands and on
the deck of the boat! I
quickly reached for it
and grabbed it and set
the hook as hard as I
could! Boy, I'm going to
go ahead and tell you,
this fish could have
pulled me in if she
wanted to. I was beside
the console of the boat
fighting this fish like
it is a Blue Marlin! I
swept the rod up, the
reeled back the slack.
This fish would not give
up! We fought for about
15 minutes until I
finally got it to the
boat. My brother, Josh,
screamed 'I'll get the
net! I'll get the net!'
He quickly got the net
and reached down to net
the fish and hit the
fish's head and she
jumped! I thought it was
over at this point, but
the fish was still on and
with one final sweep of
the net, she was in and I
landed the fish of a
lifetime! 15lbs 4oz! I
was just in absolute
shock and I had no words.
My brother was calling
everybody in his phone
that he could think of.
He finally said, 'We need
to keep this thing and
take it to the game
warden! We could get so
much money!' I said, 'No,
we're releasing this
fish. There is no way I
can kill a fish like
this. So we put it in the
livewell, took it to a
local tackle store on the
lake to show off because
my brother suggested it,
got a picture, and
released it back into
Lake Amistad and now, she
still swims out there
waiting for someone else
to come along and catch
her. |
