Noel Gyger - WEEKLY FISHING REPORT dated February 24 – March 2, 2008

Dear Fishing Friends:

SUMMARY: Day time air temperatures have been warmer and more and more fishermen are getting out and trying their luck. The ice is rapidly melting and more runs and pools are available to anglers. There is quite a bit of snow on the banks and trails but it is melting fast. Soon the boat launches will be free of snow also. Kitimat river is opening up nicely also. See the Ron Wakita report below.

CURRENT REPORT and summary for Northern Coastal Rivers:

Fishing Report from: Ron Wakita of Reliable Guide and Charters

KITIMAT RIVER: The weather this week continued to warm up and we were starting to think that spring was in the air. We had blue sky and the afternoon sun was actually quite warm. The snow banks started to shrink and just when we thought winter was finally coming to an end we got another dump of snow on Thursday (Feb 28th). The snow has not deterred Ariel Kuppers and Pat Oliver from getting out fishing for Cutthroat. They caught and released five cutthroat last week and Ariel continued to catch a couple almost every outing.

They went out on Friday only to find a bunch of anglers in their favorite spot. Such is life in the fishing world. Where ever the fish start to group, fishermen will find them. Pat said that they fished a couple of other holes but didn't catch anything. This is typical fishing for cutthroat this time of year. The fish are grouped up in certain holes and will stay there for long periods of time. The trick is to find them. 'We'll find another spot' says Pat.

DOUGLAS CHANNEL: There have been reports of feeder chinook been caught down the channel at Fish Trap.(25 miles out). The same boater also reported catching a King Crab. He also reports seeing some balls of herring. This is a good sign for the Harbour fishery for 'winter Springs'. They should be working their way up the channel to this end. There has been more boaters gearing up to fish the Kitimat harbour this weekend. Typically the hearing should come into the harbour to spawn and the feeder chinook will follow the herring. There is a small window
of opportunity when there is some really good Chinook fishing and the herring are also a lot fun to catch, especially for the kids. Stay tuned to this report as I will update this fishery as it evolves.

Noel Gyger - WEEKLY FISHING REPORT dated February 17 – February 24, 2008
(Number 59)

Dear Fishing Friends:

SUMMARY: Day time air temperatures have been mostly above freezing. The ice has started to melt on most of our rivers and more runs and pools are available to anglers. It has been a harsh winter but I understand the snow-pack is normal. The only river without an ice problem is the Kalum. The Kitimat River is opening up also. Check out the nice Kitimat River Trout photos below. It seems like spring is on its way.

MY HISTORY

Here are a couple of photos from the mid 1980’s that bring back good memories for me. This is where it all started regarding drift boats. We could not buy drift boats in our area so we built our own. This is our first fiberglass boat my friends and I built. I think we built about 10 boats. Not many of them around anymore. They were big, over 19 feet in length with high sides, not like today’s boats which are much shorter with low sides. None of us had any idea how to row them but through “trial and error” we learned. On our first drift on the upper Kalum River we got swept into a sweeper tree that just about rolled the boat. The boat was turned sideways by the strong current and could have been swept under the tree. Somehow we all managed to scramble out of the boat and up onto the sweeper and made it to shore…but we did not let go of the boat. We bailed it out and carried on down stream. Not much choice as drift boats only go down stream. In a way, we were lucky to be alive. This was a very dangerous situation. After this experience we walked the boat around the corners looking for sweepers, I think we were all a little scared and a lot more cautious. We made it through the five mile drift and each drift after that it got easier as our skill on the oars improved. Did I say we caught lots of Steelhead also?

Fishing Report from: Nicholas Dean Lodge for the Week of February 17 to 23, 2007

Hello Anglers,

From my desk back home in Ontario, I’ve been keeping track of the Terrace weather via the weather network (and one of our guides, Andrew Blix – a much more reliable source of information!), and it seems that temperatures are finally on the rise. The cold weather that had gripped us and left rivers frozen solid over the last few months is starting to lose its hold, and we should be able to get out fishing in the near future. It’s been a long time coming, and it’s almost like I get that nervous twitch when I think about firing a 90 ft cast towards that oh-so-nice seam with my Spey rod, or the sharp dip of a float under the surface as a Steelhead takes off!

We are also excitedly preparing for our first guests of the season in late March for Spring Steelhead. Tying large, often gaudy flies, sharpening hooks and retying knots are just a few of the activities that we’ll be working on over the next few weeks. And if you’re thinking of a last minute trip for some of the best Steelhead fishing you’re likely to encounter, contact Noel for a few last minute prime time spaces and a 10% discount off the 2008 rates. Ideal, reliable water conditions, and pools stacked with fish await your cast today…

Until next week, tight lines and screaming reels,

Chad Black
Operations manager
Nicholas Dean Lodge…where every cast is an adventure!

KITIMAT RIVER:

Here are some photos of two of the five cutthroat trout that Pat Oliver and Ariel Kuppers caught on the Kitimat River on Wednesday February 20th.

This week weather has been a lot milder and some anglers have been able to get out and do some Cutthroat fishing (see photo above). There is still ice along the banks but Pat and Ariel still had a good day. “They would not bite on worms but bit on small spinners”, says Pat. The Gibbs Silver Heck Croc 3/16 oz was the productive lure of the day.

DOUGLAS CHANNEL: I spoke with two skippers on Saturday who were fishing in the Kitimat Harbour for winter springs but neither one of them were able to catch any Salmon. They were both able to catch a feed of Dungeness Crab and both said they had a great day on the water. Sometimes it is more than enough just to enjoy the boating and outdoors.

CURRENT REPORT and summary for Central Coast/North Van Island Wilderness Rivers:

Fishing Report from: Nimmo Bay Resort

Here we are having lunch at the beginning of a river. A mighty salmon river on the BC coast. Glaciers are rivers in a frozen state and eventually home to the thousands of salmon that are born and return there each year.

This is a humbling experience. You are seated in a restaurant that is never crowded, beside a 10,000 year old glacier , as it births a brand new river. Few get to experience such a drama, only mother nature can produce.

Yet at Nimmo Bay each day presents another miracle, as you come face to face with one natural reality after another.

The quest for the mighty Fish allows you to participate in this annual pageant. The cry of the angler is heard above all else “Just one more cast”.

2007 SEASON REVIEW:

E-mail from Troy Adams, Troy likes to book at least two fly fishing trips (spring and summer) for wild Steelhead with Andrew Rushton of Kalum River Lodge

Hi Noel, just a quick note from Santa Cruz to say thanks for keeping up the reports, I thought I would send up a couple of pictures from the last part of April with Andrew. 3 days and nights of rain, the river came up the fishing slowed down, then picked back up. The only thing I can say is, have patience and listen to the guide, there knowledge can be rewarding. I will be back up in April to do it again, maybe we can fish together on a trip down the Kalum with Andrew. Talk to you soon, Troy Adams

Noel Gyger - WEEKLY FISHING REPORT dated February 10 – February 17, 2008
(Number 58)

Dear Fishing Friends:

SUMMARY: It has really warmed up this week and winter Steelheading is back. There is still one problem and that is the amount of ice that has formed on most of our rivers. The Skeena and Zymoetz are just about all frozen over. We are going to need some warm weather to break this up. The Kalum is still open.

Noel Gyger - WEEKLY FISHING REPORT dated February 3 – February 10, 2008
(Number 57)

Dear Fishing Friends:

SUMMARY: The weather is not much better than it was last week. It warmed up a bit but in my opinion it is still too cold to fish. Now, this may not be the case with the younger folk. The young folk’s say all you need to do is dress properly. Check-out the photo below:

Is this what they mean by proper dress? This photo was taken quite a few years ago. The fellow in the photo is Mark Krupa and he called this shot “drifting through space”. Did we have fun or what in these conditions winter steelheading on the Kalum River? Photo by Mark Krupa (at least is was his camera) I took the shot.

Extreme cold and blowing snow drifts have been the norm over the last couple of days. The Kitimat River is basically frozen over, check out the Ron Wakita report below.

Fishing Report from: Nicholas Dean Lodge for the Week of February 3 to 9, 2008

Earlier this week in the Skeena region, temperatures were warming and by all indications, the rivers were well on their way to thawing. I spoke to a few friends who had mentioned they were able to get out fishing briefly in the middle of the week, but fishing was slow and they had to look around for some open water to fish. Since then, we have been gripped by temperatures as low as – 12 C and a few feet of snow, closing off all fishing opportunities, unless one wanted to get out ice fishing!

Still, we are opportunistic that temperatures will start warming soon and we’ll be able to rid of ourselves of this mid-winter cabin fever!

If you’re thinking of trying your hand at fishing the Skeena region this year, whether it be for Spring Steelhead or Trophy Chinook, I highly suggest that you contact Noel. Noel has been living in the Skeena region all his life, and is a wealth of knowledge regarding the best times to fish and can tailor an experience that is right for you.

Be sure to check out this week’s feature on trophy Chinook fishing to see if this type of fishing might appeal to you. Here is a little bit of the article:

Fishing for Trophy Skeena River Chinook

It never ceases to amaze me that some local residents in Terrace have little idea of exactly what’s in their backyard. The same can be said of my hometown in Fergus, Ontario regarding brown trout fishing. Sure, they know that the Skeena and its tributaries have some fish that move through each year, but on more than a few occasions, it’s surprised me that they weren’t aware that some of the largest Salmon and Steelhead in the world return to the river in front of them each year. This is made even more apparent since the river is world famous for the fish it produces, and anglers travel from all over the globe to have a chance at these fish.

CURRENT REPORT and summary for Northern Coastal Rivers:

Fishing Report from: Ron Wakita of Reliable Guide and Charters

KITIMAT RIVER: With the recent cold weather, the Kitimat River is almost completely frozen from bank to bank in the lower Kitimat. There is very limited access to the upper Kitimat River and very poor fishing conditions yet we received reports of a couple of snowmobilers fishing the Powerlines and catching a couple of trout. You have to admire the resourcefulness of the 'hardcore angler'.

DOUGLAS CHANNEL: There have been a couple of boats who braved the winter elements this week looking for winter chinook but neither of the boaters I spoke to were able to catch any. The herring usually start to migrate into the Kitimat harbour this time of the year to spawn and the feeder chinook follow them into this end of the Douglas Channel. This fishery is difficult to predict. It happens when it happens usually some time between now and the end of March.

Noel Gyger - WEEKLY FISHING REPORT dated January 27 – February 3, 2008
(Number 56)

Dear Fishing Friends:

SUMMARY: It has been just too cold all week. Fishing is poor, simple as that. Normal day time temperatures are 0 to -1 but they have been as low as -10 to -15. Add in the wind chill factor and fishing is near impossible. Time to tie some flys and get some tackle ready for when the weather warms up which the weatherman says will be next week.

Thank you to those who sent me their vote for the best 2007 fishing Photo of The Week. Drum roll please…and the winner is:

#18 May 13, 2007. This beautiful wild Steelhead was landed on the Kalum River by pro fly fishing guide Sky Richard. Could this be the 'photo of the year'? Full Report

The above text is the caption that is posted on the website…and included a question…and I got my answer. Thanks again for sending me your votes.

LIST OF “New” ITEMS POSTED ON THE WEBSITE THIS WEEK:

The new scenic river photo posted on “Scenic Photos” is of the Zymoetz (Copper) River and was taken by Gayle Miller. Gayle and her husband Elmer were my guests in 2001. They told me they were very impressed with the fly fishing opportunity on many of our local rivers…and were especially moved by the views on the Copper. I have five of Gayle’s photos framed and on the wall in my office.

Noel Gyger - WEEKLY FISHING REPORT dated January 13 – January 20, 2008

Dear Fishing Friends:

SUMMARY: The winter weather has been fair all week. All of our local rivers are extremely low and clean. With these conditions the angler must be stealthy as the fish are spooked. Try using small terminal tackle and only fish the deep water.

Thank you to those who have sent me their vote for best 2007 fishing Photo of the Week. Keep those votes coming. It is wonderful to hear from you. I will let you know at the end of January which one received the most votes. Cast here to view the photos again www.noelgyger.ca/photos-of-the-week

CURRENT REPORT and summary for Northern Coastal Rivers:

Fishing Report from: Ron Wakita of Reliable Guide and Charters

The photo above is from last summer when the weather was good and the Chinook fishing was excellent. The lucky angler is Justin Lowe with a nice Chinook from the Kitimat River

KITIMAT RIVER: This week the weather was quite mild compared to the cold and snow we have been getting. There has been very little fishing activity on the Kitimat River although the weather has been more forgiving. The trout fishing is usually better this time of year for anyone willing to get out and give it a try.

DOUGLAS CHANNEL: With the milder weather there was a couple of boats fishing the Kitimat Harbour for winter Chinook this week but the two skippers I spoke to had no fish to report. The conditions were 'great' but 'no fish'. It was flat calm water and nice to get the boat out to charge the batteries. Maybe this weekend more boats will get out and find some fish.

Update to this update: Just got word that Clayton Harker and his fishing partner landed four Chinook on Saturday. They were fishing with #6 Gibbs Stewart 50/50. Stay tuned.

CURRENT REPORT and summary for Northern Coastal Rivers:

Fishing Report from: Ron Wakita of Reliable Guide and Charters

KITIMAT RIVER: With the Christmas decorations been put away may create some time to think about fishing. The weather in the Kitimat area is far from optimal. We have had one of the more severe winters with more snow than we have had in recent years. I met a couple of anglers in our tackle store who were going to brave the elements and fish for some trout. I directed them to the Sawmill, Cable Car, Humphry's and Goose Creek. These are all fishing spots on the Kitimat River that usually produce this time of the year. More importantly, they are fishing spots with easy accessibility. They said they would call me or stop back into the store with the fishing results. As soon as I receive the info I will forward the info in this report. Stay tuned if winter trout fishing is of interest to you.

My guiding company, Reliable Guide and Charters Ltd. is starting to do booking trips for the 2008 season. I just booked two couples to do a four day drift boat package for Steelhead. We have also received numerous inquiries for Salt water charters. The 2008 Chinook season has created the most interest as this season's projections for Chinook are extremely good. Please contact Noel for booking details.

DOUGLAS CHANNEL: Weather conditions have prohibited any fishing activity in the Douglas Channel. I have spoken to many Salt anglers who are itching to get out including myself. CURRENT REPORT and summary for Central Coast/North Van Island Wilderness Rivers:

Fishing Report from: Nimmo Bay Resort

This is a great shot of one of our lunch spots. A coast range restaurant that is never crowded. After a morning of fishing, we can come here to eat, drink and think our way to the afternoon fishery. Over 50,000 sq. miles from sea level to seven thousand feet is available to us and our guests. The glacier here is a magnificent piece of ice, slowly retreating and melting as our climate gets warmer. We have noticed glaciers disappear over the 27 years we have been flying the coast.

It is time we all had a good look at what we do within our environments and how do we reduce our carbon footprints and reliance on fossil fuels. Nimmo Bay is very active in these areas and is a part of a new Sustainable tourism collective to understand the best practices of its members and how to position tourism in BC as a Sustainable Industry into the future. We all have to ask ourselves if this government wants tourism to double its revenues by 2015, how do they plan to do that without doubling the carbon footprint of the industry?

I trust many of BC’s tourism people will be at the Tourism Industry Conference Feb. 20 – 22 in Vancouver at the Wall Centre. Perhaps I will see you there.

2007 SEASON REVIEW:

The photo is of a beautiful wild Steelhead and Evgeny Lebedeff of Moscow, Russia. A long way to travel and fish but Evgeny and his two fishing buddies really enjoyed themselves. They booked with me in late September 2007 and their guide was Dustin Kovacvich of Nicholas Dean Lodge. They booked for five days, traveled a lot of country and fished many different rivers.

The photo of the week shows me with a male Steelhead landed a few years ago. The other gentleman is Italo Labignan of Canadian Sport Fishing www.canadian-sportfishing.com Over the years Italo and I have shot over 11 television fishing shows in northwest BC for both Steelhead and Salmon. We were doing a shoot on the Kalum River in the spring. The wild Steelhead at this time come in all colours. The males usually are darker than the females. Some fish have been in the river all winter and some have just come in. You don’t know which ones you are going to catch. Just “kiss em” all and let em go! If you are interested to watch any of these fishing shows on DVD please contact Italo.

Noel Gyger - WEEKLY FISHING REPORT dated December 30 – January 6, 2008
(Number 52)

Dear Fishing Friends:

SUMMARY: I am celebrating “one year” of publishing the fishing reports, hope you will celebrate with me. Yes, it’s been one year. How time flies. The first report, in this new series, was sent out on January 7, 2007 exactly 52 weeks ago to a new e-mail list. I would like to thank everyone who signed up over the year to receive them.

Winter Steelheading is in full swing on a number of our local rivers. The day time air temperatures have been hovering around zero to plus one. Sometimes rain, sometimes snow. Anyway, typical fishing conditions for this time of year. Most all rivers are low and clean. Be careful walking on the ice near the edges. The Kitimat River is fishing OK for Trout if you can find some open water.

Thank you to those who have sent me their vote for best 2007 fishing Photo of the Week. Keep those votes coming. It is wonderful to hear from you.

LIST OF “New” ITEMS POSTED ON THE WEBSITE THIS WEEK:

- Jan 1/08 One Conservation item www.noelgyger.ca/conservation
- Jan 1/08 Vote for your favorite 2007 Photo of The Week www.noelgyger.ca/photos-of-the-week
- Jan 3/08 One Conservation item www.noelgyger.ca/conservation

NOW BOOKING FOR 2008 Let me know if I can be of service to book you with the 'best' fishing guide and/or fishing lodges. There are NO extra charges to book through me, just a lot of free information and advice from a person with years and years of fishing and fish guiding experience. It is like hiring two guides for the price of one. I will promptly answer your questions and concerns. Cast here http://noelgyger.ca/special-guided.htm to read more of what I have to offer.

Many people book three trips per year to our area; one trip in the spring (March-April-May), one trip in the summer (June-July-August) and one trip in the fall (September-October-November). They love having the same guide but fishing for different fish in different areas.

Be sure to check out my website at www.noelgyger.ca for news bulletins, mid week fishing updates, conservation, my history, quality waters strategy, special guided fishing trips, video clips, scenic river photos, wildlife photos and others, comments from past guests, informational articles, archived fishing reports from 1996 through 2002 and a sportfishing market place. I hope it meets with your entire satisfaction.

2007 SEASON REVIEW:

As we approach mid winter my mind “drifts” back to a particular warm summer day in July 4th, 2007. My family and I were fishing with ocean charter guide Wes Owen who operates out of the Douglas Channel near Kitimat. We thought if the fishing for Chinook was slow we would try to “net” some Dungeness Crab. Wes said we should be able to catch both. He was correct. We did catch both and we had a great day. Wes is a first class guy. We all were very comfortable on his 11 foot beam, Bayliner 'Lil Kris'. Check out the video clip at: Video Clip 0005 Title: A day with charter guide Wes Owen…or check out the full report (to warm your bones from the winter chills) at http://www.noelgyger.ca/weekly-fishing-reports/july-1-8_2007.doc

To: Nimmo Bay Resort: “Last night I was a glacier. Today I was a waterfall. Tomorrow I will be an ocean.”, Gray Hawn, Photographer

GUEST FISHING PHOTOS:

The photo above was sent to me by Genady Davidov. Genady and his two fishing friends had booked a guided fishing trip with me and they said they had a “great” time. They were guided to many different rivers and caught many Steelhead, Salmon, Trout and Dolly Varden Char.

Noel Gyger - WEEKLY FISHING REPORT dated December 23 – December 30, 2007

Dear Fishing Friends:

SUMMARY: Happy New Year everyone! Winter Steelheading is in full swing although the cold weather has slowed it down a bit. Sometimes it only means shorter fishing days but the “determined” fishermen are still getting out there. Some would say they’re “crazy”! The Zymoetz (Copper) River closes to angling above the sign at the transmission line crossing (below Zymoetz Canyon) at the end of the month (January 1 to June 15). So get out and enjoy before the closure. To be clear just the upper reaches of the river are closed one still may angle on the very low end, just make sure you fish below the boundary at the first canyon. The Kalum River is open to angling all winter although access to some pools are difficult as to the extreme low water and snow. The Kitimat River is open all winter also and if we get some warmer weather fishing for Trout should be OK.

Fishing Report from: Nimmo Bay Resort

One of Nimmo Bay's fabulous lunch hideouts. After a morning of fabulous fishing, you have this to look forward to. A gourmet picnic on a remote west coast Vancouver Island beach. The wine is at the proper temperature, the food is prepared to perfection and the coffee & tea is just what you ordered.

There are few nicer places on this earth, especially those places where there are no other people to impose on your most memorable moments.

When the snow is on the ground and the ice is on the water, moments like this keep us focused on what is to come when spring and summer arrive.

For those of you who have not called Noel to reserve your Heli-fishing adventure for 2008, it is time to do just that. Get a jump start in the new year and commit to your angling odyssey as soon as possible. You'll be glad you did.

To: Nimmo Bay Resort: “You’ll experience an elevation of the body, of the spirit, and of the soul.”, Tim Floyd, Former Head Coach, Chicago Bulls

To: Nicholas Dean Lodge: “First time Salmon fishing, heavy learning curve, enjoyed ourselves immensely – thanks to all.”' – Jim Purcell and Don Berggren, Ontario

To: Randy’s River Guiding: 'Hi to all fisher friends around the world, since 1996 we know Noel Gyger and Randy Marshall and we would like to thank both of them for the great time we had out on the river together and that it will be even better in next years.
We have seen lots of wildlife, rivers and even the ocean.
Where ever I made a cast I caught fish...now isn't that something?
I by myself caught over the years more than 100 Steelhead and there was even one over 30 pounds.
All I know about fishing in BC I learned from Randy and due to Noel I have had the chance to fish the Copper and the Kalum more than once, so I wish both of them a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year, and some more good years fishing together. All the best to all fisher friend too.' Guy and Astrid, Luxembourg

Noel Gyger - WEEKLY FISHING REPORT dated December 16 – December 23, 2007
(Number 50)

Dear Fishing Friends:

SUMMARY: Merry Christmas everyone! Winter Steelheading is in full swing. Some rivers are iced up on the edges so be very careful when walking on these ledges.

LIST OF “New” ITEMS POSTED ON THE WEBSITE THIS WEEK:

- Dec 17 one article posted on Informational Articles http://www.noelgyger.ca/info-articles.htm

KITIMAT RIVER: Water conditions are not very good. At times the river is full of slush.

Christmas to me is a joyous time to spend with family and friends and celebrate all the tidings of the season. It is a time to exchange gifts, celebrate Christ and also to take the time to truly appreciate the people near and dear to our hearts.

In the fishing world it is also a time to reflect on special fishing trips during the past season and hope that next year brings more memorable moments. Attached are a couple of my personal special moments.

I would like extend my personal Best Wishes to all the readers of this Fishing Report. I wish you all a Very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.

Special Thanks to the many people who help provide info, pictures and memories for this report.

God Bless you all.
Sincerely
Ron Wakita
